Modern dashboards can light up with a dozen different icons, and it is not always obvious which ones mean "pull over now" and which mean "get this checked soon." Here is a quick guide to the most common ones.
Check engine light (steady)
A steady check engine light usually means an emissions or engine sensor issue. It is safe to keep driving in most cases, but should be scanned soon to avoid a small issue becoming a bigger one.
Check engine light (flashing)
A flashing check engine light is more serious — it typically means an active engine misfire. Reduce speed and get it looked at as soon as possible.
Battery / charging light
This points to a charging system issue, often the alternator or battery. Your car may only run for a short time before it stalls.
Oil pressure light
This is one of the few lights that means stop driving immediately. Low oil pressure can cause serious engine damage within minutes.
Temperature warning light
An overheating engine should be shut off as soon as it is safe to pull over, to avoid warping the engine or blowing a head gasket.
